SUMMARY:Cheers to 40 Years! North Carolina Craft Brewing History
DESCRIPTION:@ \n \n \n\n2025 marks the 40th anniversary of the legalization of craft beer brewing in North Carolina. University Libraries’ Martha Blakeney Hodges Special Collections and University Archives partnered with Well Crafted NC and Weatherspoon Art Museum for exhibits and an event recognizing the history of this state’s multi-million dollar industry. \nThe Martha Blakeney Hodges Special Collections and University Archives will display “Cheers to 40 Years\,” a special exhibit with materials from the Well Crafted NC research project\, available on Jackson Library\, 2nd Floor. \nOn Oct. 23\, Well Crafted NC will host a special event to continue the celebration. At 5 p.m.\, the exhibit curator and team guide visitors in a tour of the “Cheers to 40 Years” exhibit. At 6 p.m.\, guests are invited to the Weatherspoon Art Museum for a panel discussion about the early years of North Carolina craft beer. Three industry experts who were active in the North Carolina craft beer community during the period of 1985-2005 will discuss the ways in which these years continue to impact the industry today. \nThose interested in attending are asked to register in advance and indicate whether they want to attend the tour\, panel discussion\, or both. \nMeet the panelists\nKinney Baughman: The first professional brewer in Watauga County\, Baughman brewed Boone’s first IPA and an early pumpkin spice beer. His Amber Framboise won a bronze medal in 1995 at the Great American Beer Festival in the Belgian-style Specialty Ales category\, well before there was a GABF category for sour beers. Baughman ran his own company\, Brewco\, and is a retired adjunct professor of philosophy at Appalachian State University. \nBobby Bush: Author of hundreds of articles about U.S. beer and the brewing industry dating back to the early 1990s. Bush is also co-founder of the Hickory Hops Craft beer Festival\, the third-oldest continuously running beer festival in North Carolina. Bush is an avid collector of breweriana with more than 400 t-shirts\, hundreds of pint glasses and growlers\, and thousands of coasters. \nJulie Johnson: Former co-owner and editor of “All About Beer” magazine. She authored the an article for the Raleigh News and Observer in 2002\, which helped launch the “Pop the Cap” movement that she went on to co-lead. This changed the craft beer landscape of North Carolina\, jumpstarting a billion-dollar industry and creating hundreds of businesses and thousands of jobs. \n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n Add to calendar \n\n\n\n \n Google Calendar \n \n\n \n iCalendar \n \n\n \n Outlook 365 \n \n\n \n Outlook Live

SUMMARY:Care and Custody: Past Responses to Mental Health
DESCRIPTION:@ \n \n \n\n\n\nCare and Custody is a traveling banner exhibition and companion website that explores the treatment of people with mental health conditions throughout history\, especially in the United States\, bringing to light the tension that has existed between care and custody. Physicians\, advocates\, families\, and government agencies have all contributed to the shaping of mental health policies. Care and Custody examines this history to understand how the country has moved away from custodial forms of treatment\, toward more inclusive approaches\, and worked to protect the rights of people with mental health conditions. \nCare and Custody includes an education component featuring a new university module and a digital gallery that further explores selected works from the historical collections of the NLM\, which are also available in their entirety in NLM Digital Collections. \nThe National Library of Medicine produced Care and Custody: Past Responses to Mental Health. The guest curator was public historian and educator Anne E. Parsons\, PhD (UNC at Greensboro)\, who published the book From Asylum to Prison: Deinstitutionalization and the Rise of Mass Incarceration. \n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n Add to calendar \n\n\n\n \n Google Calendar \n \n\n \n iCalendar \n \n\n \n Outlook 365 \n \n\n \n Outlook Live

SUMMARY:Huma Bhabha: Artist Talk and Sculpture Dedication
DESCRIPTION:@ \n \n \n\n\n\n\n\n4:30pm: Artist Talk by Huma Bhabha in the Weatherspoon’sMargaret and Bill Benjamin Auditorium \n5:30–7pm: Reception in the Weatherspoon’sSculpture Courtyard; remarks at 6pm \nJoin us to hear from artist Huma Bhabha and celebrate the dedication of her monumental sculpture\, “Receiver” (2019). Reception to follow. FREE! \nDrawing equally from classical precedents such as ancient Egyptian and Greek sculpture and modern referents such as science fiction films\, Huma Bhabha crafts enigmatic beings that engage our notions of humanity and our understanding of self and other. Bhabha’s figures greet us as mysterious time travelers\, raising many questions. Is that grin gleeful or mischievous? Did this creature arrive here from the past or the future? Was it exhumed from an archeological dig or dropped down from a spaceship? Is it more human or divine\, monster or alien? \nIn addition to these human involvements\, Bhabha is also concerned with how we interact with the environment\, and specifically the waste we produce and our inability to see the beauty and usefulness in the discarded. Countering these habits\, she crafts her sculptures from found cork\, Styrofoam\, and other abandoned materials that she assembles\, carves\, and then casts in bronze. Receiver retains the textures of these materials\, as well as additional marks added with paint—bits of red that suggest painted toenails and dabs of green and yellow that recall both graffiti and body art. \nLocation: Margaret and Bill Benjamin Auditorium (first floor) and Sculpture Courtyard \n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n Add to calendar \n\n\n\n \n Google Calendar \n \n\n \n iCalendar \n \n\n \n Outlook 365 \n \n\n \n Outlook Live
