McGovern Was Here, Back in the Summer of ‘69

012010NewsAndNotes_McGovernThose who look forward to hearing former Senator George McGovern speak Jan. 27 on campus may be interested in knowing he has spoken here before. In 1969, he was the commencement speaker. The event occurred at Grimsley High School’s football stadium.

Two years afterward, he would become the Democratic Party’s nominee for president, ultimately losing to incumbent Richard Nixon.

In his address, he called for an end to the Vietnam War.

“We must end our blind plunge toward catastrophe, and the constant swelling of military budgets of a time when other areas of national life are starved,” he said.

He also said, “We must tend quickly to the sickness of our cities, the decline of our rural areas and the polluting of our environment.”

Chancellor James Ferguson, system President Bill Friday and Governor Robert Scott also spoke.
