‘Freshman Summer Reading’ Needs Faculty Discussion Leaders

New partnerships and collaborations for the Freshman Summer Reading Project brings about new energy, excitement, and, larger than anticipated participation rates.  With nearly 600 freshmen participating in the program once designed for 100, the need for faculty discussion leaders has grown.

In addition to students at SOAR who can opt in to this program, a number of UNCG departments have committed student program participants, such as Lloyd International Honors College, Grogan Residential College, First Year Experience, Make a Difference House, and UNCG Guarantee.  These students will receive one of two books during SOAR and then participate in a faculty-led discussion and lunch during Rawkin’ Welcome Week.

Several faculty discussion leaders are already on board, including Chancellor Linda Brady and Provost David Perrin.  Returning faculty participants selected the two titles for students to choose this year; Absolutely American: “Four Years at West Point” by David Lipsky and “A Thousand Splendid Suns” by Khaled Hosseini (Author of “The Kite Runner”).

Any faculty wishing to volunteer as a discussion leader may contact Garrett Kachellek in Orientation & Family Programs at jgkachel@uncg.edu.
