Area’s General Assembly Members Invited to Campus

033110NewsAndNotes_GeneralAssemblyUNCG leaders invited area North Carolina General Assembly members to campus last Friday.

The purpose of the mid-day meeting was to provide an overview of 2010 legislative priorities from a university perspective. The overview included an alternative tuition proposal, support for additional need-based financial aid and concerns about the impact of additional budget cuts on academic quality. UNCG also presented results of the economic impact analysis of UNCG’s proposed School of Pharmacy.

In addition, Brady spoke about three items of interest for UNCG:

  • UNCG/NC A&T Joint School of Nanoscience & Nanoengineering funding
  • NC A&T/UNCG Joint Innovation & Commercialization Initiative funding
  • A request for a special provision regarding funding for land acquisition and construction of a railroad underpass to connect the current central campus to the West Lee Street Corridor.

Three students spoke on the impact of financial aid: Casandra Quarrells, Jason Flores and Ariel Gray.

Chancellor Brady gave the legislators a tour, showing them areas for potential future development on the West Lee Street corridor and the downtown site for the proposed School of Pharmacy.

“We appreciated the opportunity to share our priorities with legislators,” Brady said. “North Carolina has consistently supported higher education and we are grateful.”
