UNCG Campus Weekly

Campus Weekly is published each Wednesday when classes are in session. In the summer, it is published biweekly.

Walking Away with the Gold

UNCG has received a Gold Achievement Award from the American Heart Association for employee fitness. Gold level recognition is for companies that fulfill criteria such as offering employees physical activity support, increasing healthy eating options at work, promoting a culture of wellness, as well as implementing at least six of the physical activities, two of the nutrition activities and one of the culture activities listed in the American Heart Association’s application.

Nationally, 101 companies achieved Platinum recognition, and 430 received Gold recognition.

In February UNCG launched HealthyUNCG, a program for employees developed by students, staff and faculty to support healthy lifestyles through social, mental and physical well-being. Currently, the program is focusing on encouraging employees to take a Personal Wellness Profile – a questionnaire that collects self-reported information about a person’s health, and then confidential results are shared with employees including suggestions for improving their health.

Another campus initiative is Spartan Steps. The fall wellness competition involved seven departments. This spring, about 265 individuals are involved. An update is here.

Many staff, faculty and students are involved in the AMA’s Heart Walk each May.  The Heart Walk raises money and awareness for heart and circulatory health. A kickoff for team leaders was held on March 26. UNCG currently has 60 members signed up to walk – the fifth best showing among participants, so far. For more information on the Heart Walk, to be held on May 22 at Greensboro’s Country Park – or for information about campus team leaders – contact Kim Sousa-Peoples.
