New ERM Director and Changes in Safety Office

A note from Reade Taylor, vice chancellor for business affairs:

I am pleased to inform you that Bruce Griffin has been named as the Director of Enterprise Risk Management (ERM). Bruce is a university wide resource and his responsibilities include working closely with departments to identify university risks, working with the BOT to communicate significant risks and our mitigation plan, and working with the BOT and Executive Staff to develop a risk appetite profile that will help guide departments as they make operational decisions.

As the Director of Environmental Health and Safety since 1993, Bruce not only worked closely with issues of high risk, but also leveraged his interest in ERM to research best practices in higher education to get UNCG’s risk management program off the ground a year or so ago. He has already worked closely with Rebecca Adams to help assess the risks of our UNCG plan and has set an ambitious agenda for his first few months in this new full time role. Bruce is also working towards his PhD in Higher Education Administration here at UNCG.

Tim Sloan has agreed to assume Bruce’s previous responsibilities on an interim basis in Environmental Health & Safety. Tim has been with the Office of Safety since 2003. He was the university’s first industrial hygienist and has developed many of the occupational health programs our employees benefit from today. Most recently he has been supporting our expanding research enterprise, first by developing our Radiation Safety program and over the past two years working with the vice chancellor for research and economic development to develop Laboratory Safety Plans that are both user-friendly and help create safer labs. He has taken on leadership roles within the office whenever possible and proven to be an effective and trustworthy member of the team. He is currently pursuing his MBA through the Bryan School and became a Certified Safety Professional in 2007.

Enterprise Risk Management and Environmental Health & Safety at UNCG report to Rollin Donelson, Associate Vice Chancellor for Safety and Emergency Management. In addition to these two units, Public Safety and Police, and Emergency Management also report to Mr. Donelson. This organization helps UNCG: protect our students, faculty, staff and visitors; be aware of our risks; prepare for disasters, reduce the likelihood of serious impact, and assure timely recovery.
