070710Announcements_SerckSteve Serck, who joined UNCG as associate counsel in 2008, was named university counsel, effective July 1.

He has held the post on an interim basis since April, when longtime University Counsel Lucien “Skip” Capone left UNCG to become general counsel at UNC Asheville. Vice Provost J. Alan Boyette led the committee that conducted a national search and recommended Serck.

“With extensive experience dealing with the legal issues of higher education, Steve will continue to provide the reliable guidance and outstanding service the campus has come to expect from the Office of University Counsel,” Chancellor Linda P. Brady said.

From 1989 until 2008, Serck was in private practice with the Ahlers & Cooney Law Firm in Des Moines, Iowa, where he specialized in higher education law and civil litigation. He served as an officer and member of the board of directors of the Polk County (Iowa) Bar Association from 2002-07.

He received his bachelor’s degree from the University of Northern Iowa in 1986 and his law degree from the University of Iowa College of Law in 1989. He is a member of the Order of the Coif, a legal honor society.

The Office of University Counsel reports to the chancellor and is responsible for providing legal advice to the Board of Trustees, administrators, faculty and staff on a broad spectrum of issues including contracts, federal and state regulations, due process, campus security, employment law and NCAA rules. It works closely with the North Carolina Attorney General’s Office on litigation involving the university in federal and state courts and in administrative hearings.
