In National RecycleMania Competition

This year, our campus is participating in RecycleMania, an education and outreach sustainability project for the entire campus.

RecycleMania is a friendly competition between colleges and universities from across the country, with campus activities designed to encouraging recycling. The materials will be monitored by weighing the materials being recycled and reporting this information to RecycleMania officials.

UNCG is competing in the co-mingled category, which is already collected and weighed on a regular basis. The competition begins Feb. 6 and ends April 2.

Upon completion of RecycleMania, each participating school will be ranked in each category in which they are registered, and other categories such as most recycled materials per capita and the highest recycling rate overall.

Kickoff Event RecycleMania will hold a special kickoff event on Feb. 7 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Elliot University Center’s Cone Ballroom. Waste Reduction and Recycling Operations Supervisor Ben Kunka will give a presentation at 10:30 a.m. about UNCG’s recycling programs. In addition students, faculty and staff are invited to a “Brown Bag” lunch and learn at the same location at 12:30 p.m. when Kunka and members of the Office of Sustainability will present on current campus sustainability topics and answer questions.

Also at the kickoff event will be snacks, music, and representation from academic and operations departments that are involved in waste reduction and recycling at UNCG.

The university’s letter grade for sustainability increased from D to B last year. The University developed an office dedicated to sustainability in late spring 2010, which is led by Richard (Trey) McDonald, the sustainability coordinator. Jessica Trotman, the sustainability education specialist was hired in August 2010.
