Great Baseball Stories

040611NewsAndNotes_BaseballThe Friends of the UNCG Libraries and Spartan Athletics invite you to a free talk by Brett Friedlander author of “Chasing Moonlight: The True Story of Field of Dreams’ Doc Graham,” Tuesday, April 12, at 4:30 p.m. in the EUC’s Dogwood Room.

It will be followed by a book signing at the UNCG-Wake Forest baseball game at the UNCG baseball stadium, which begins at 6 p.m. The baseball game is free of charge as well.

Moonlight Graham was made famous by Burt Lancaster in the film, but his real life is also interesting. Moonlight’s brother was UNC system president Frank Porter Graham, and his cousin was UNCG Chancellor Edward Kidder Graham. He also juggled a career in minor league baseball with his medical training.

Our baseball season is emerging as a great story as well. They faced conference-leading Elon last weekend, and won two of their three games. In Sunday’s game, they came from behind in the ninth inning. UNCG is now tied for third in the SoCon – just one game out of first place. In the preseason polls, the media had picked them to finish tenth; the coaches picked them to finish ninth.
