Dr. Joseph Hill

Dr. Joseph Hill (Specialized Education Services) has been appointed to the N.C. Governor’s Council for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing. He is co-author of “The Hidden Treasure of Black ASL: Its History and Structure.” The authors received the Andrew Foster Humanitarian Award, in recognition of their work on Black ASL (American Sign Language), at the 25th National Black Deaf Advocate (NBDA) conference. Hill is a graduate of the doctoral program in the linguistics department at Gallaudet University. He was part of the research team who conducted the Black ASL project. In addition, he accompanied a group of students to Italy over the summer to learn Italian Sign Language. It was a summer program for American college students to learn Italian Sign Language and deaf culture. He was there as an assistant for Italian Sign Language teachers and as a teacher of ASL and English for Italian Deaf students and interpreters.
