Apply for 2013 Leadership Institute

As the inaugural year of UNCG Leadership Institute draws to a close, the application process opens for the 2013 class. UNCG faculty and staff may apply.

The institute develops leadership capacity at the departmental and the university level, leveraging in part UNCG’s own expertise and knowledge-base. It is a cost-effective opportunity to work closely with both external and internal leaders in the development of leadership competencies in support of the UNCG’s strategic plan.

Participants have included a cross-section of the university – including faculty, staff and administrators. They have been working in small teams on university-wide projects to help solve an institutional issue or problem.

In working on their group projects, they’ve met with stakeholders across the university, as well as with university leadership, says Dr. Edna Chun, associate vice chancellor for human resource services. The team presentations to the chancellor and other leaders will be in mid-December.

A great aspect of the institute has been a mentoring program. “The mentors have done an extraordinary job,” Chun says. She says it has benefitted the mentees greatly, but also the mentors. As an example, her discussions with MaryK McGinley, director of development, School of Nursing, has led her to have a much fuller understanding of the role of Advancement than she had had, she notes.

The program is for emerging leaders. The ideal participant is a UNCG employee who:

  • Supervises others or manages a function with significant scope/impact
  • Is an emerging leader and has demonstrated a commitment to attaining greater leadership or performance competency through job-related training, certifications, or similar activities
  • Has demonstrated the ability to contribute to the university’s strategic goals and the change process.

This program will likely help in providing a better understanding of who may be ready as leadership positions may become available, Chun noted.

Twenty-eight individuals were a part of the first cohort in the Leadership Institute. A similar number of individuals are expected to take part in the 2013 Leadership Institute.

The deadline for applications is Thursday, Nov. 29, 2012.
